Planet X

Nippon Ichi Software hit the big time in 2003 with their release of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (or for PSP, Afternoon of Darkness); I believe it was the first major strategy RPG release in the US market since Final Fantasy Tactics (but I’m probably wrong).

The quirky character designs, hilarious dialog, and ridiculous plot, combined with the solid gameplay (and lots of replayability; the max character level is 9999 instead of 99) made it an instant hit with SRPG fans, and launched a franchise that continues to this day.
