Our thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese

The 9.0 magnitude quake in Sendai and the 8.8 magnitude quake in Honshu (both this morning) are numbers 5 and 6 on the list of largest (by magnitude) earthquakes.

The destruction caused by the earthquakes and the havoc wrought by the tsunami are incredible. In the video below, you can see skyscrapers in Tokyo shaking back and forth.

Various nuclear plants have had some problems in the aftermath; while the link states that the radiation levels have surged to 1000 times normal levels, they don’t say what those normal levels are, or give any kind of basis for comparison.

I couldn’t get to sleep last night, so I was still awake when my twitter feed was filled with Japanese people talking about the violent shaking and how they’d never experienced an earthquake like that before; it was some time before any of the news agencies in the US updated with any news about the quakes.

My friends in Japan are all reportedly doing fine, if a bit shaken.
