Quote of the Indeterminate Time Interval – David Stockman

by wfgodbold

To the Daily Beast:

I think the Republicans need to stand rigidly firm and shut the government down for a few days. The Obama White House is weak. If the Republicans hold the line, Obama will fold faster than a lawn chair. And the Republicans will get their $60 billion in reductions. [emphasis added]

The whole reason the government is in danger of being “shut down” in the first place is that the Democrats refused to pass a budget for 2011 last year, when they were supposed to!

Fiscal year 2011 started at the end of September.

Last. Year.

But with an election coming up, and the Democrats already projected to take a drubbing the likes of which hadn’t been seen in years, Pelosi and Reid elected to fund the government with a series of short-term funding bills.

Now that the GOP has taken control of the House (remember, the Democrats still control the Senate and Presidency; last year, when the budget should have been passed, they also controlled the House), the spin is that the shutdown is the GOP’s fault for being intractable.

They want grandma to starve, eat cat food, and die of cancer! They want to shut down Planned Parenthood and NPR! They’re arguing for a reduction of the proposed budget of roughly 2%!

Quelle horreur!

President Obama’s proposed budget for 2011 is $3,800,000,000,000. That’s an increase of $200,000,000,000 over 2010’s budget. The parties in Congress are currently fighting over (at most) $100,000,000,000 in cuts, or half of the increase since 2010 (as I understand it; I’m no pundit (I don’t even play one on TV!)).

By all means, shut down the government and quit paying “non-essential” government employees; but with three wars on (even if two of them can be laid at Bush’s feet, the third is all Obama’s), the military hardly counts as non-essential.

Higher taxes can’t solve the spending hole we’ve dug for ourselves; if we’re going to make even a token effort at eliminating the deficit, spending has got to be cut.

We can’t put it off forever.
