Samurai of Space

by wfgodbold

Space battleships, alien empires, interstellar war, a ship with crewed by misfits, and a captain who’s either a genius or insane; sure, they’re common enough tropes, but Irresponsible Captain Tylor plays them all to the hilt.

After defusing a hostage situation on his first day in the space navy, Justy Ueki Tylor is promoted to Captain, given command of the battlship Soyokaze, and shuffled off to be forgotten along with the rest of the idiots who make up her crew. What follows is top-notch humor, decent SF, and an entertaining series that never quite takes itself seriously.

I’m not sure how well it’s done in the US, but John Ringo was inspired by the show when he wrote the Honorverse short story A Ship Named Francis.
