Phil Corbett, New York Times newsroom arbiter of “style and taste”, heal thyself

by wfgodbold

Apparently Mr. Keller took flak from readers for his use of the term “illegals” as shorthand for illegal immigrants.

He then went to Mr. Corbett, the NYT’s arbiter of style and taste for instruction, and was told:

I do think “illegals” as a shorthand noun has an unnecessarily pejorative tone, and it is routinely used by the anti-immigration side. I think it’s wise to steer clear. We also get push back over “illegal immigrant,” but to me that’s just factual and neutral. [emphasis added]

The anti-immigration side?

Really?

Are you sure you didn’t mean the anti-illegal immigration side?

Worst mea culpa ever.
